Which foods affect your skin?

Although food only plays a limited role on our skin’s health, it is important to understand how different foods have negative and positive effects. Your skin is a direct reflection of your body’s overall health.

Many people have asked me if having too much sugar in their diet will cause acne. There is no scientific link between acne and an individual’s sugar intake. However, keeping a diet that keeps your blood sugar at a steady level can have positive effects on your skin. The experts say you want to try to stay away from foods that will spike your blood sugar levels on a regular basis. Foods like sweet drinks and any kind of sugary treat.

People who maintain a high vegetable diet can experience positive effects on their skin, due to the volume of antioxidants that they are consuming. Antioxidants will slow down oxidative damage. The oxidative damage can contribute to fine lines, dark pigmentation and loss of skin elasticity. Although vegetables are wonderful for your skin’s health, there are multiple other foods that are also excellent to consider. Some of those foods include salmon, green tea, tomatoes, carrots, and walnuts, just to name a few. The key is a healthy balanced life style and diet to help maintain your beautiful skin.

Some foods to consider:

Salmon: Antioxidant, can also calm inflammation.

Green Tea: Contains polyphenols, making it an antioxidant and an anti-inflammatory.

Tomato: Rich in lycopene, very potent antioxidant to help protect the skin from UV damage.

Carrots: High levels of beta carotene, a precursor of vitamin A. Vitamin A is the main ingredient in most anti-aging products.

Walnuts: Help speed up collagen production due to their high content of omega-3 fatty acids.

Oranges: Rich in vitamin C, which has been proven to help prevent winkles and age related dry skin.
